Description : Madhumita Raut, a globally recognized face of Odissi dance, is the inheritor and proponent of her illustrious father, the legendary Padamashree Guru Mayadhar Raut's dance legacy, he is the pioneering spirit who revived Odissi in the 1950s with Shastra-based knowledge. Brought up in Delhi in an atmosphere of dance and music, Madhumita has trained under Guruji with diligence, discipline and dedication.
An alumna of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan(Delhi) and Indraprastha College for Women (Delhi University) Madhumita Raut holds a Master's degree in English literature from Delhi University. She received a scholarship from the Delhi Govt.to study Odissi. She also holds a Diploma in Performing Arts from Khairagarh University. Later she was awarded fellowship by the Ministry of Culture, Govt.of India for research in Odissi. Her landmark book Odissi-History,Evolution & Technique has been highly appreciated for its in-depth research. Madhumita has also edited Guruji’s biography 'Odissi Yaatra' written by her disciple. She regularly writes for various publications.
An intense and dynamic dancer, Madhumita has emerged as a passionate &dedicated Guru and scholar. Madhumita Raut has performed Odissi dance in more than 31 countries and is teaching Odissi widely all over the world.
Madhumita has added many new dance pieces to Odissi repertoire like Kharahara PriyaPallavi, Shiva Panchakshara Stotram, Shabari Prasang, Mahisasura Mardini Stotram amongst others. Her speciality is Odissi based on Tulasidas’ Ramcharitmanas like the Shabari Prasang or ‘Pushpavatika’ depicting Ram-Sita's first meeting.
Madhumita Raut has effectively used the medium of dance for social causes by presenting dances celebrating the girl-child. She has performed for CAP. She is an A grade artist of Doordarshan (National TV) and an empaneled artist of I.C.C.R.
Madhumita’s dance recitals have been appreciated in the U.K, USA, France, Belgium, Germany,Japan, Spain, Portugal, Spain, Malaysia etc. She has showcased her talent in more than 29 countries. Madhumita is also actively teaching Odissi in theNetherlands (Holland), Germany, Japan & USA.
A stickler for standards and discipline, Madhumita is known for imparting value-based and Vedic education in dance. She is the force behind the next generation of extensively trained Odissi dancers. Her disciples are taking the message of Odissi dance all over the world with their performances and workshops.
Madhumita Raut has been honoured with the Bharata Nirman Award(1997), Kala Gaurav Samman (2007), Utkal Kanya award(2010),Mahila Sashakti Award(2011), Odisha Ghungru award (2011) and Odisha Living Legend award (2011).
A dancer, Guru, scholar and author, Madhumita Raut’s mission is to take classical dance Odissi to every nook and corner of the world.
